Type 1 Diabetes, Including Insulin Pump Therapy/CGM
Type 1 diabetes is associated with a deficiency or lack of insulin. The pancreatic islet cells stop producing insulin in the quantities needed to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Without sufficient insulin, the blood glucose level rises, causing some of the common signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia.
One of the first signs of high blood sugar is unexpected and unexplained weight loss that occurs over several days and is associated with the onset of their diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes must be treated with insulin. This involves injecting insulin under the skin for it to be absorbed into the bloodstream where it can then access the cells of the body that require it.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is much more common than type 1 diabetes with about 90-95 percent of people with diabetes having T2D. People with type 2 diabetes develop a process called insulin resistance, which causes their bodies not to use the insulin they produce. Insulin is a Taxi Cab for the glucose which takes it to the cell where the glucose is needed for energy. In Type 2 diabetes, the taxi cab still carries the glucose to the cell but the cell will not allow the glucose inside. This causes a continual buildup of sugar in the bloodstream eventually resulting in symptoms such as excessive thirst, excessive urination, fatigue, headaches, and changes in vision. As a result, the body tries to compensate by having the pancreas produce more and more insulin. Over time, if diabetes is not treated appropriately, the pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin altogether
Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition, meaning that the longer someone has it, the more help they will need to manage blood glucose levels. At Magnolia Endocrinology, we are committed to being there at each step of the way of your health journey.
The onset of type 2 diabetes is usually associated with being overweight and is harder to control when food choices are not adjusted to lessen the impact of weight gain and poorly controlled blood sugar. Those who are overweight and physically inactive are at an increased likelihood to develop type 2 diabetes. Gestational Diabetes
Many women may develop diabetes during pregnancy due to abnormal blood glucose levels during this time. Screenings vary person to person based on an individual’s needs, but generally will include:
- Initial glucose challenge test.
- Follow-up glucose tolerance testing. If your blood sugar is higher than normal, you’ll need another glucose tolerance test to determine if you have the condition.
Treatment for gestational diabetes includes lifestyle changes, blood sugar monitoring, and medication, if necessary. Our team is committed to developing a comprehensive plan to ensure the most effective care possible.
